Car Insurance Coverage

What Is Car Insurance Coverage?

Car insurance coverage is the scope of your car insurance. In other words, it defines what car-related incidents and expenses are covered by your insurance.
It ensures your financial protection in case of an accident or another incident related to your car such as vandalism, theft or natural disaster.

Depending on the type of coverage you choose, your car insurance can cover costs related to car repair, medical bills and lost wages, in addition to funeral costs and legal fees.

Common car insurance terms to understand include:

  • Policy: A contract between you and your insurance company that details your coverage
  • Premium: The price you pay for your policy
  • Deductible: The amount of money you pay out of pocket when you file an insurance claim
  • Limits: The maximum amount of money your policy will pay for a specific type of coverage

Every type of coverage includes limits, which you will agree on with your insurance agent when creating your policy.

Car Insurance Coverage Types

Liability Coverage

Liability Coverage is mandatory in most states. It offers financial protection if you cause a car accident that results in injury or car damage.

Liability Coverage is divided in two parts: property damage and bodily injury. Most states require you to be insured for both.

Property damage covers repair costs for another person’s damaged vehicle as per the agreed coverage limits, when you are found at fault in an accident. It does not extend to costs related to repair for your own vehicle.

Bodily injury covers the cost of medical bills for injured parties, when you are at fault. In some cases, it may also cover expenses related to legal fees and lost wages, up to the agreed coverage limits. It does not extend to any injuries you may sustain in an accident.

For financial protection relating to you, your passengers and your car, consider collision coverage, comprehensive coverage and medical payment coverage. Our agents will help you choose the best coverage for your needs and budget.

Medical Coverage

Options for medical coverage vary by state.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) covers medical expenses for you and your passengers after a car accident, regardless of who is at fault. It may be optional or required, depending on your state.

PIP extends to coverage for lost wages or child care if you are unable to work or care for your children after an accident.

Medical Payments Coverage is optional, and it is available only in states that do not offer PIP. It covers medical expenses related to injuries that you or your passengers sustain in a car accident, regardless of who was at fault.

It can also extend to injuries you sustain if you’re struck as a pedestrian or if you’re injured while in someone else’s vehicle, but it does not extend to coverage for lost wages or child care after an accident.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage

Uninsured Motorist Coverage pays for car repairs and medical expenses if you get into an accident with a driver who is not insured, and they are at fault for the accident.

This type of coverage may be optional or required, depending on your state.

Vehicle Coverage

There are two types of vehicle coverage: collision and comprehensive.

  • Collision Coverage pays for vehicle repair costs related to an accident with another car or object.
  • Comprehensive Coverage pays for vehicle repair costs related to a covered loss such as flood, fire, vandalism or theft.

Additional Coverage Options

  • Roadside Assistance covers costs related to towing services, fuel delivery and flat tire repair.
  • Rental Reimbursement covers costs associated with a rental car if your car is damaged and unavailable for use for more than 24 hours, as the result of a covered accident.

How To Determine The Right Amount Of Car Insurance Coverage

To determine what type of coverage you need, the first step is to look at your state’s minimum car insurance requirement. You can do this easily on a platform like ValuePenguin or by contacting our insurance agents.

Once you know the minimum requirement, you can evaluate:

  • The risks: Weigh the risks associated with your coverage, such as the traffic, your level of experience and your vehicle’s worth.
  • Your vehicle’s worth: Keep in mind that in case of irreparable damage, your coverage will need to offset your car’s value.
  • The lienholder’s (lender’s) requirements: Contact our Fred Loya insurance agents to learn about our options and requirements.
  • Your budget: Weigh how much can you afford to invest in car insurance per month vs. how much you can afford to cash out in case of an unpredictable car incident.

Evaluating these key coverage points will help you choose the right car insurance option(s) for yourself, your loved ones and your property. If you need further help, our agents are ready to assist you.
